The Golden Deer is a scene both in Valmiki's Ramayana and the Thai version of Ramayana under the name "Rāmakian". The scene shares similar narrative significance with other major literary works in South and Southeast Asia such as Sanskrit's Shakuntala and Javanese tale of Panji as the golden deer in the stories not only did lure leading characters to particular directions but also help in facilitating situations to develop tensions which are crucial for climaxes and resolutions in later episodes.

The Golden Deer is a piece of performance where natural characteristics of deer are put into Thai dance repertoire under narrative of Thai Ramayana. The repertoire has been handed down from generations of Thai dance masters as it is important that the dancing deer must be able to really lure the audience with beauty that lures Rama which leads to Ravana's kidnap of Sita.
